Colby Corino Gains Tournament Victory Over Silas Mason on 'Powerrr'
The National Wrestling Alliance’s Jax Dane Memorial Heavyweight Tournament rolls on with a bracket-busting elimination on this week’s NWA Powerrr!
“With a guaranteed shot at the World’s Heavyweight title on the line, everything people thought about this tournament might just have changed,” says NWA Chief Operating Officer Joe Galli of the shocking outcome.
Colby Corino faced Silas Mason on the April 1 episode of NWA’s weekly flagship broadcast. As the No. 8 seed, “The Prince of Old-School” had the unenviable task of squaring off against “The Thrillbilly” in second round action.
To reach this week’s Powerrr, each man had very different paths.
“The Thrillbilly” has been the odds-on favorite since the Dane Memorial was announced earlier this year. Mason, coming off putting Bryan Idol out of action with a broken clavicle, received a bye as the No. 1 seed.
Corino, on the other hand, was forced to fight his way into the tournament. He defeated Sam Adonis in a first-round “play-in” to garner the No. 8 seed.
Their tournament match revisits a rivalry stemming back to last August. Corino previously battled Mason at NWA 76 in Philadelphia. There, the former National Champion picked up a signature victory over the second-generation star in a hard-hitting highlight of the night.
However, the tides shifted on Powerrr. Corino capitalized on Southern Six shenanigans, primarily interference from long-time junior heavyweight rival Kerry Morton, to overcome the odds and continue forward.
“The No. 1 seed is gone,” Galli points out.
Many consider Corino’s victory over the seemingly unstoppable Mason an “upset.” Galli suggests it more accurately reflects the young competitor’s grit.
“Colby Corino is certainly the smallest competitor in this tournament, but he might also have the greatest motivation and determination to win,” he says.
A one-time NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion, Corino is a proven commodity within his weight class. However, “The Prince of Old School” has made well-known his intent to follow the footsteps of his father, former NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino.
“Even NWA President William Patrick Corgan has openly questioned whether Colby Corino can succeed against true heavyweights,” Galli notes. “This victory over Silas Mason seems to offer something of an answer.”
With the victory, Corino takes his place in the Dane Memorial Heavyweight Tournament Finals. That match against a TBD opponent is scheduled for May 17, when The 2025 Crockett Cup comes to Philadelphia.
“If Colby is able to win one more match, he’ll get an opportunity to prove himself against the top heavyweight on the planet,” Galli says. “He earns a shot at the NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion.”
The 2025 Crockett Cup, NWA’s annual tag team tradition, is always one of the company’s most anticipated Signature Live Events. This year it emanates from Philly’s legendary 2300 Arena.
In the Main Event, Thom Latimer puts “The Ten Pounds of Gold” on the line against ECW legend and former NWA World’s Champ Rhino. That same night, WWE superstar Natalya makes her NWA in-ring debut.
