1988 Crockett Cup Winners: Sting & Lex Luger

Having defected from The Four Horsemen early in the year, Lex Luger was leading the charge against Ric Flair and his cronies. Also on Flair’s heels was another of the company’s fastest-rising stars: Sting.

Both were in hot pursuit of the then-World’s Champion and Horsemen leader. Protecting him at every turn were Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard.

The 1988 Crockett Cup was held only days after Anderson and Blanchard regained the NWA World Tag Team titles from Luger and Barry Windham, who shockingly turned on his partner to join The Horsemen.

Left scrambling to find a partner, “The Total Package” teamed with Sting. The two young lions faced the champs April 22 in the tournament finals. Though Greensboro, SC, is “Horsemen Country,” Sting and Luger cemented their place in history that night with victory.
